The Blue Moon Rising

The Blue Moon Ritual: Closing a Cycle Under May's Rare Full Moon May 31st

The full moon on May 31st is what's known as a Blue Moon, which means it's the second full moon to occur within the same calendar month. The first full moon arrived on May 1st, and because the lunar cycle lasts approximately 29.5 days, we're getting another one just before the month comes to an end. Blue Moons only happen every few years, which is where the phrase “once in a blue moon” originated. While the moon itself won't actually appear blue, cultures throughout history have viewed these rarer lunar events as significant markers in time.

This year's Blue Moon falls on a Sunday, the day of the Sun. I thought that was interesting because while the moon is often associated with reflection and looking inward, the Sun is all about awareness and illumination. It feels like the perfect combination for taking an honest look at your life, your habits, your goals, and even your environment. Maybe that's why I spent most of the day cleaning. By the time I was done, I realized how much clutter had quietly accumulated around me, and how much lighter everything felt once it was gone.

What I find interesting is that humans have always created rituals around the moon, regardless of religion, culture, or geography. Long before modern calendars existed, people looked to the sky to track seasons, planting cycles, migrations, and the passage of time. The moon was one of the few constants. It was predictable. It disappeared and returned. It waxed and waned. It provided structure in a world where very little else was certain.

Because of that, the full moon became associated with completion. If the new moon represented a beginning, the full moon represented a culmination. A moment to take inventory. A moment to evaluate what had grown, what had succeeded, what had failed, and what needed to be released before beginning again. Whether someone views that through a spiritual lens or a practical one, the symbolism still holds up today.

I spent most of today cleaning my home, and it wasn't something I consciously planned around the Blue Moon. I just woke up and felt the need to start clearing things out. One shelf turned into another shelf. Dusting turned into reorganizing. Before I knew it, I was cleaning areas that I hadn't touched in months. By the end of the day, I realized how much clutter I had allowed to quietly accumulate around me. Not enough to notice on a daily basis, but enough to affect how the space felt.

It made me think about why cleansing rituals have become so closely connected to full moons. Most people immediately think of crystals, moon water, sage, or elaborate ceremonies, but I think one of the most powerful rituals is much simpler than that. Clean your space. Open the windows. Wash your curtains. Get rid of things you don't use anymore. Create an environment that reflects where you're trying to go rather than where you've been.

The same principle applies to goals and affirmations. A lot of people write down goals at the beginning of the year and never revisit them. The same affirmations get repeated over and over, even when the person saying them has changed. This Blue Moon feels like a good opportunity to revisit those things and ask whether they still align with the person you're becoming. Some goals may need to be adjusted. Some may need to be expanded. Some may need to be abandoned entirely because they no longer represent what you actually want.

One thing I'm reminding myself to do during this full moon is something incredibly basic that I've been neglecting lately: go outside. Fresh air sounds simple until you realize you've spent days moving between screens, projects, responsibilities, and routines without actually stopping to experience the world around you. The moon has a way of reminding us that there is a larger rhythm happening outside of our schedules and notifications.

I'm curious what your own full moon rituals look like. Do you journal? Pull cards? Meditate? Clean your house from top to bottom like I apparently decided to do today? Or do you simply take a few minutes to step outside and look up? Whatever your practice is, I'd love to hear about it.
